On Tuesday night, my flight into Baton Rouge got in over an hour late, and of course Eden was already asleep when I got home. So, I tiptoed into her room, ever so carefully put my hand through the slots in her crib to touch her little hand, and just watched her for a few minutes. It was all I could do not to try picking her up.
When I left the room, I said to myself, "As soon as I go to sleep, when I wake up in the morning it'll be time to go in there!"
So, I eventually went to bed only to wake up at 4 a.m., look at the clock and think to myself, "Ok, if she wakes up before 5:30 I really do have to let her try to go back to sleep on her own. But if she wakes up at 6, then I can go in there. Only a few more hours."
Then I woke up a little bit later, checked the clock again, and thought, "IT'S ALMOST TIME. Just go back to sleep and when you wake up you can go in there."
Finally, the little munchkin woke up and I could hear her moving around enough to constitute going in to see her at 7 a.m. As I quietly walked in the room, I said, "psssst." She turned her head and when she saw me she quickly rolled onto her stomach and started moving around in excitement. As I picked her up, I promise she really did put her little arm around my neck and started trying to eat my shoulder. It was wonderful. As I gave her her bottle, she kept looking up at me and putting her hand through my hair as if to say, "Wow, I haven't seen this in a while."
Definitely the best "waiting for Santa" feeling I've had in a while.
