the first day: It's ok, baby.

This morning was slightly out of the usual. Eden was slightly fussy and at one point cried a river when I took her away from Ashley to change her diaper. Ashley was getting ready, and Eden knew she was leaving ... without her.

Tonight's title, however, has a double meaning. When Ashley left, we calmed Eden down briefly with a little PBS, and Ashley said a quick goodbye. Then, Eden helped me pack the car, and we were off - no problem! We got to PDO.
Once she would get down (only took about a minute), she quickly ran to the door, up the ramp, and into the legs of the director, Whitney. Then, she rounded the corner to see Miss Marie and Miss Delores, her teachers from last year. After a few kisses, she ran to her new room and noticed another little boy screaming with tears because he did not want his mom to leave. Eden stopped at the door and looked at me. She squinted her eyes a bit and pouted her lip. Then, she let out a little "eeehhhh" mirroring his sadness. So I said, "It's okay, baby. He's sad. Do you want to give him a hug?" She nodded yes, and ran into the arms of her new teacher, Michelle. This time, she was not upset but empathic. She did it one more time before I left. I went to tell her bye, and she grabbed my hand to help her up the stairs to the slide. Then, a little girl started crying. She looked at me with her sad face. I asked if she wanted to give the little girl a hug. She nodded yes then asked me to help her down the stairs. I did. She waddled over to the girl, stopped, looked at her, then grabed the first thing she saw ... a train. A peace offering? Perhaps. Or it could have been an attempt to say, "It's okay, baby."

The report at the end of the day from Eden's new teachers, Jennifer and Michelle, is that Eden is SO sweet. It was the first thing they said to Ashley when she walked in the room. They could not get over her many attempts to try and comfort the other kids.
Although Ashley was proud of that, she was also proud that she ironed her and Eden's clothes ... in the morning. That'll likely never happen for the rest of the semester {she told me so tonight}. But, then again, it's the price one must pay to have a cutie-patootie like E was today.

The pics below are from Eden's afternoon adventures. She only slept 1 hour at PDO {compared to her normal 3}, but we were even impressed with the one hour since it was her first day sleeping on a nap mat on the floor in a room with 9 other toddlers. As a result, Ashley and Eden spent the afternoon reading books, watching PBS, going for a long walk with the stroller {and Georgia and her paci} to look for birds, and of course playing in Momma's closet with her shoes. Ashley thought it was a bit crazy that Eden actually picked a perfectly paired shoe for her dress. Maybe it was really luck, or maybe she already has great fashion sense ...

While Eden was quicker to cry this afternoon {like the tears that flowed when Miss Marie and Miss Delores got in their own cars and not Eden's}, overall she was a great trooper and even spent 45 minutes quietly reading alone in her crib. We're hopeful that her naps will get longer at PDO with more practice, but we really couldn't have asked for a better first day.
