sew excited

Please excuse the cheesy post title, but I am so-o-o excited about this project. My last sewing project of the summer, Eden's nap mat for PDO this year, had actually been in the works for over three months. At the end of school last year, I checked out the nap mats in the 1-year-old room to see the different options and what the teachers thought of them. The winning design was basically a large pillow case made to fit a basic kindermat {didn't even know what that was before this summer} with a separate little blanket. I knew right away that this would be one of my projects for the summer.

I searched for awhile to find the perfect material and loved it even more when it arrived in the mail. Let me just say that I will not be making another one of these anytime soon as it took way more planning and scheming than I thought it would {it always does when I don't have a pattern}, but I loved working on it and seeing it unfold as I went. The overall project involved, let's see, purchases for materials from 5 different stores {one online} and monogramming from a store in Brandon cause I just liked their fonts better. See, I almost went overboard with this one.

I made the blanket first since it was the easiest part ...

Eden loved it right away. Can't you tell? She even had to bring over Betsy to help while I was getting pics of the blankie.

The blanket really was simple, but then I decided it needed a hand-stitched message to E on the bottom. Took a few hours late into the night, but I'm so glad it's there.

Over the course of last week, I was able to finish up the mat cover itself with closing straps, carry straps, and an outside pocket for E's naptime essentials - her paci and Georgia.

On a more serious and sentimental note, I do realize that this project is really more for me than for Eden. She'll probably only remember this from pictures or from me keeping the blanket until she goes to college ;), and that's ok. But it makes me feel like part of me is there with her every day comforting her and lovin' on her while she's away {just made myself tear up}. Guess that's what got me *sew* excited.

Cute, cute! As much as you have been sewing you would probably enjoy a serger. It eliminates the need to zig zag the edges after you sew two pieces together to keep it from fraying. When you serge something, the inside seam looks just like something you would buy in a store! It is awesome. If you get one, I would recommend you get it from a store that can repair it and teach you how to do the basic things b/c it has sooo much to offer and it would be worth your money to learn it all! Call me if you want to know more...hope you all have a good school year!
