let the wild rumpus start!

Eden loves books. She is constantly having Ashley or me read her one or more during any one setting (usualy the latter), and not too long ago she started to "read" them herself. Quite cute.

Recently, she has started to act out what is going on in some of her favorite books. For instance, in Curious George and the bunny, she (a) asks for the book by hopping like a bunny, (b) puts her hands over her eyes when George plays hide-and-seek, (c) shrugs her shoulders and puts her hands out (the sign for "where is it") when George cannot find the bunny, and (d) tells the bunnies night-night.

Another one of her favorite books is Curious George and the rocket. When we get to the countdown page she starts to get slightly nervous (makes a sad face while whining), but when the rocket does blast off she throws her arms in the air ... BLAST OFF indeed!

When I went to an academic conference in March I took a short trip to a bookstore to see what they had (can't start too early bringing back presents can you?). At that point Eden was beginning her infatuation with dogs. So, when I saw I'll Teach My Dog a Lot of Words I thought "perfect." This book has stood the test of time. She barks to indicate that is the book she wants you to read then becomes animated as soon as she sees the dog doing all that she does. She says ball as soon as she sees the "catch a ball" page and scrathes her head then blows her nose. She also learned to sing with birds (and can sing on command most days). She has a lovely voice ... and she definitely got that from her mother.

When we were in Oxford, Ashley pickedup two books by a local writer. Eden learned to strech on command a while ago, so it's no surprise that she does her best stretch while you read this page. There's a page in God is With Me Through the Day where a racoon says, "I am strong" to which Eden does her very best stroooong pose.

One of her favorite books of late is a compilation of rhymes and songs. She lets us know this is the book she wants by dancing and touching her head. When you sing the ABCs, she nods her head ... until you get to "U" at which point she does her sad face and whines. For This Old Man, she pats her hand and stomps her feet, and recently for Bow-Wow Says the Dog she points to herself and laughs when you read "and what coocoos say you know." I especially love that! One of her favorite pages (and by favorite I mean she makes us sing it 50 times in a row) is Heads, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes. She points to her head, knees and toes. Shoulders can't be too far away.

Although she has not asked for her Aesop's book lately, she used to blow all the time for this book. Why? Because there is a picture of a man blowing on a bowl of porridge. That's pretty much the only thing she wanted to see in that book for about 2 weeks. Funny.

If you don't own a copy of Goodnight Moon (even if you don't have kids) go out and buy it today. Eden demands it. We got our copy from Brenda and Brian (friends from Indiana). She especially loves to moo like a cow jumping over the moon and point out the red "ball"oon..

Just the other day Ashley noticed that Eden was acting somewhat different with Each Peach Pear Plum. She has always barked at the sight of the dog (on the front and back covers and on 3 or so pages) and done her sign for bird when she sees one, but the other night while I was reading it she started to point out the things for "I Spy" (which is the point of the book). She now points out Tom Thumb, Cinderella, and Jack and Jill. There are 12 I Spies total. The legend on the back of the book says a 16 month old who gets 3/12 can be considered "gifted." :)

Another purchase I made while at my March conference was Mommy Calls Me Monkeypants. She asks for this by doing her sign for monkey (pointing one or both of her index fingers to her armpit). Then you open the book and start to read. About half the time she'll let you read the whole thing. The other half ... well let's just say she is acting like a Monkeypants. She'll let you read the first part (Mommy calls me Monkeypants just ...) then she'll quickly close the book and laugh. She thinks she is funny. And she is.

Who doesn't remember Where the Wild Things Are? I do. Hopefully Eden will to. She sure is loving it now, regardless. She asks for the book by dancing (swaying side to side) and trys to hurry you through the first several pages to get to the part where Max cries, "Let the wild rumpus start!" The first time I read the book with her I stayed on the wild rumpus pages for a little while and imitated music while she danced. Now, that is the book. Once that is over, Max sailing back over a year to his room where his supper is still hot just isn't all that impressive.

So, those are her favorites these days. Ashley almost bought a set of Nancy Drew's at an antique store a while back but thought that might be getting just a little bit ahead of things. We're sure there are more books to come.
